New certification label: Responsibly Produced Coir

19 february 2026

RHP is introducing a new certification scheme and label: Responsibly Produced Coir, which guarantees that coir as a substrate raw material is responsibly produced.

With the launch of Responsibly Produced Coir, RHP takes an important new step. In addition to the existing RHP and RAG quality marks for quality & safety, RHP now also offers certification systems for responsible production. Recently for peat (Responsibly Produced Peat), and now also for coir (Responsibly Produced Coir). Coir carrying the Responsibly Produced Coir label is guaranteed to be produced with care for both environmental and social aspects.

What is RPC certification?

With the Responsibly Produced Coir label, RHP now offers a certification system in which RPC‑certified coir complies with:

  • all local and national environmental and social legislation.
  • social requirements such as safe and healthy working conditions, no child labour, and clear agreements on working hours, wages and employment conditions.
  • environmental aspects, with attention to issues such as (waste)water management and waste policies.
  • a monitoring system.
  • clear requirements for Chain of Custody and clear labelling for RPC‑certified coir. RPC uses three label levels that indicate what percentage of the coir volume is RPC‑certified.

An important step for the sector

With RPC, RHP gives a strong impulse to sustainability within the substrate chain. Following the certification for Responsibly Produced Peat – RPP), coir is a logical next step. RPC has been developed with and for coir producers worldwide who want to demonstrate that they invest in people, the environment, and reliable supply chain transparency. For growers and substrate producers, the RPC label provides assurance that their coir products originate from responsible production practices.
